How Long Should My Linear Drain Be?

We love guiding our customers to perfect drain solutions. This means helping you determine how long your drain should be, and making it custom for you.

So we begin with 1 question… “What is the rough opening on either end of the drain? (side wall to side wall or back wall to curb).

Here’s why…

To keep things simple, smart and cost effective, it makes the most sense to have a clear open trench from finish tile to finish tile.

Here’s how we’ll achieve that…

We use the rough to rough measurement and make your drain 1” less. That will give you 1/2” on either end of the drain. Backer board is usually 1/2” thick, so it will be touching the outside ends of the drain body. As the drain is 7/16” thick on all sides. Thin set and tile (about 1/2”) will leave you clear and open trench from finish tile to finish tile. This approach eliminates standing water on either end of the drain and the need to slope the tiles on each end back to the drain. Now you have one flat plane sloping to the drain. (1FPS2D) This is most important with a curb-less entrance.

In order to follow the approach above you’ll need to confirm the 2 following details.

1. Are you using 1/2” backer board on the side walls?

AND

2. Is your thin set and tile on the side wall will be about 1/2” also?

Note: If you are using something other than standard 3/8” thick tile or will be “floating” your walls, we can help you with your custom solution. Please give us call.

Please give us a call with any questions. We’d love to answer any of your questions and provide you with the perfect solution to your linear drain project.
